Ukraine launches Starlink Direct to Cell: SMS without mobile signal, nationwide

Ukraine has become the first country in Europe to pilot Starlink Direct to Cell — a revolutionary satellite communication technology. Kyivstar subscribers can now send SMS even in areas with no traditional mobile coverage, including during blackouts or in remote regions.

Starlink Direct to Cell automatically connects a smartphone to a satellite when no mobile signal is available. The feature currently supports SMS and is expected to expand to voice and data soon.

To use it, you need:

 • An Android smartphone with 4G (LTE) support. iPhone 13+ support will be added soon.

 • A clear view of the sky — no obstacles or indoors.

 • The network selection mode set to automatic.

Once connected, your device will display: Kyivstar | SpaceX.

The service is included in the existing Kyivstar tariff and does not require any additional payments.

The launch is a major step in enhancing Ukraine’s digital infrastructure during wartime. As attacks on energy and telecom networks continue, innovations like this ensure that Ukrainians can stay in touch — even when everything else is down.

Starlink Direct to Cell covers the entire territory of Ukraine, except for border areas, temporarily occupied regions, and active combat zones.
